This 11 Day & 10 Night Peru jungle camping tour into the Pacaya Samiria Reserve will take travelers very deep into the largest, most diverse natural areas in the world. This tour is only for the most adventurous of travelers looking to really expose themselves to the sights and sounds of the Amazon rainforest. We will travel up the Marañon river we will have the opportunity to see a very private, untouched part of the Amazon rainforest where most non-locals don’t get to experience. ITINERARY HIGHLIGHTS

Day 1

  • Morning departure from Iquitos City via auto to arrive in the port town of Nanay (Bellavista), where the Rio Nanay meets the Rio Amazonas. After departing by boat we will travel downriver 70 KM (about 2 hours). During the riverboat trip we will have a great possibility of seeing caimans, turtles, herons, pink river dolphins, snakes, and many other species of flora/fauna along the riverbank.

 

  • Monkey Island – a small island about 15 minutes from the Maniti Lodge, which shelters a large number of monkeys in their natural habitat. During your visit on the island you will have the unique opportunity to observe and interact with a wide variety of monkeys that include: Sloth, Goeldi’s monkey, Tamarin monkey, Capuchin monkey, Yellow-Handed Titi monkey, Masked Titi monkey, Cebidae monkey, Wooly monkey, Squirrel monkey, Spider monkey, South American Coati monkey, and many more! Along with the various species of monkeys you will have to opportunity to hold very large Anacondas, Boas and interact with the very unique and rare Amazonian mata-mata turtle. At Monkey Island we will also see alligators, turtles, toucans, macaws, parrots, etc.

 

  • Dolphin watching session at the camp where we will have the unique opportunity to see the pink freshwater dolphin. If we are lucky we will also have the chance to swim with them on the main Amazon River.

 

  • In the evening we will go on a nocturnal nature hike to see what types of species can be seen (lizards, snakes, spiders, monkeys).

 

  • Overnight at Maniti Lodge

Day 2

  • Morning jungle hike (30-45 minutes) with destination “Palo Alto”.

 

  • The unique attraction “Palo Alto Mirador” is a lookout point that has 3 different observation deck levels. Here guests have a birds-eye view of the lowland Peruvian Amazon from 5, 10, and 15 meters above ground. Here we will have the opportunity to spend the night with excellent opportunities to observe various species of wildlife in their natural habitat.

 

  • Daytime exploration of the area that includes hiking, canoe ride in lagoon, fishing (depending on request from passenger).

 

  • In the evening we will go on a night time nature walk to see what types of species can be seen (reptiles, spiders, monkeys).

 

  • Overnight at top observation deck of Palo Alto (setting up a tent or in hammocks).

Day 3

  • Breakfast & departure from Palo Alto with destination Pacaya Samiria Reserve (we will need to go through Iquitos to arrive to the Pacaya Samiria Reserve).

 

  • Upon arrival to Iquitos (Port of Nanay) we will visit the floating market and neighborhood of Belen. Private Canoe ride through the floating market and neighborhood of Belén, located on the edge of the Itaya River.

 

  • On the outskirts of the market we will visit the largest aquatic plant in the world (Victoria Regia).

 

  • Lunch in Iquitos and Departure from Iquitos City via private auto with destination Nauta.

 

  • Departure in private motorboat we will travel upriver, passing the spectacular meeting of 2 major rivers (Ucayali & Marañon) that come together to form the Amazon River, until we arrive to the small pueblo of La Libertad. During the riverboat trip you will have a great possibility of seeing caimans, turtles, herons, pink river dolphins, snakes, and many other species of flora/fauna along the riverbank.

 

  • Afternoon dolphin watching session at the camp where we will have the unique opportunity to see the pink freshwater dolphin. If we are lucky we will also have the chance to swim with them.

 

  • Return to Camp for Dinner.

 

  • After sunset we will go on an excursion via canoe to spot and catch caiman, we will have the opportunity to hold, touch, and take photos with the caiman.

 

  • Overnight in tents in the Pacaya Samiria Reserve.

Day 4

  • Morning departure from La Libertad in private motorboat we will travel upriver into the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.

 

  • Passenger identification at the reserve’s entrance check-point. Arrival in the Arequipa community where the first camp will be set up.

 

  • Lunch will be served upon arrival.

 

  • Watch diverse species of birds along the way, including egrets, hawks, horned screamers, jacanas, parrots and parakeets. It is also possible to see Amazon River dolphins.

 

  • After sunset we will go on an excursion via canoe to spot and catch caiman, we will have the opportunity to hold, touch, and take photos with the caiman.

 

  • Return to Camp for Dinner.

 

  • Overnight in tents at Pacaya Samiria Reserve.

Day 5

  • Early morning breakfast will be served followed by departure campsite. We will cruise the Rio Marañon for about 3 hours until we reach our destination (Shansho Cocha Lake area). During the riverboat trip you will have a great possibility of seeing primates, reptiles, turtles, birds, pink river dolphins, and many other species of flora/fauna along the riverbank.

 

  • Arrival for campsite setup and lunch.

 

  • Something that immediately catches our attention is the black waters of the rivers, which reflects with such an identical image, the sky, the clouds, the bank’s vegetation, the huge trees, that the tourists have the sensation of traveling between mirrors; this is why the Pacaya Samiria is many times referred to as the “jungle of the mirrors”.

 

  • Afternoon fishing for piranha, peacock bass and other species of fish in the reserve.

 

  • We will return to camp to have dinner.

 

  • After dinner we will go on a night time nature walk to see what types of species can be seen (lizards, snakes, spiders, monkeys).

 

  • Overnight in Tents in Pacaya Samiria Reserve.

Day 6

  • We will pack our things and travel upriver into the National Reserve via Rio Marañon and entering the Rio Yanayacu (close to pueblo Viente de Enero).

 

  • We will cruise the river until we reach our destination. During the riverboat trip you will have a great possibility of seeing primates, reptiles, turtles, birds, pink river dolphins, and many other species of flora/fauna along the riverbank.

 

  • Arrival for campsite setup and lunch

 

  • Jungle hike in the Pacaya Samiria Reserve where we will have the unique opportunity to see a vast number of primates, reptiles, turtles, birds, pink river dolphins, butterflies, and many other wildlife interact in their natural habitat. We will see and learn about various types of Amazonian plants such as the Ayahuasca Vine (Banisteriopsis caapi), Cats Claw Vine (uncaria tomentosa), Victoria Amazonica, Ceiba Tree, Sensitive Plant (mimosa pudica), and more.

 

  • Today we will visit some lagoons in the reserve. They hold a great variety of palms, large trees and a beautiful landscape. At this place, we can make a variety of activities, dependent on the tourist, such as trekking, canoe rides, fishing, and identification of plants, animal spotting or maybe just relaxing with a nice cool swim in one of the lagoons.

 

  • At night time after dinner, we will make a night excursion by boat to search for the various species of nocturnal animals; this also gives us the enjoyable opportunity to hear the symphony of sounds that comes from the forest at night.
  • Overnight Pacaya Samiria Reserve.

Day 7

  • Early morning breakfast will be served followed by a jungle an expedition to the Pacaya Samiria Reserve around the area of Viente de Enero, here we will have the unique opportunity to see a vast number of primates, reptiles, turtles, birds, pink river dolphins, butterflies, and many other wildlife interact in their natural habitat.

 

  • We will see and learn about various types of Amazonian plants such as the Ayahuasca Vine (Banisteriopsis caapi), Cats Claw Vine (uncaria tomentosa), Victoria Amazonica, Ceiba Tree, Sensitive Plant (mimosa pudica), and more.

 

  • Today we again will visit Japon Creek & Yanta Lake in the reserve. These places hold a great variety of palms, large trees and a beautiful wildlife. Here we can make a variety of activities such as trekking, canoe rides, fishing, and identification of plants, animal spotting or maybe just relaxing with a nice cool swim in one of the lagoons.

 

  • Midday we will stop to have our lunch.

 

  • After dinner we will go on a night time nature walk to see what types of species can be seen (lizards, snakes, spiders, monkeys).

 

  • Overnight Pacaya Samiria Reserve.

Day 8

  • Early morning breakfast will be served followed by a jungle an expedition to the Pacaya Samiria Reserve around the area of Sacarita de Yarina, here we will have the unique opportunity to see a vast number of primates, reptiles, turtles, birds, pink river dolphins, butterflies, and many other wildlife interact in their natural habitat.

 

  • During the trip you could spot the graceful pink dolphins and the “taricayas”, local name for the yellow-spotted river turtles (Podocnemis unifilis). You could also have the chance of seeing the elusive giant river otters (Ptenerura brasiliensis), skillful swimmers and fishers.

 

  • Arrive to destination and camp installed. Lunch on the edge of the river overlooking at the beautiful scenery.

 

  • Walk around the camp to discover this area’s exquisite flora and fauna. See the wonderful color changes of the rainforest at sunset.

 

  • Dinner and comments with your guide regarding next day’s programmed activities.

 

  • At night time after dinner, we will make a night excursion by boat to search for the various species of nocturnal animals; this also gives us the enjoyable opportunity to hear the symphony of sounds that comes from the forest at night.

 

  • Overnight in tents at Pacaya Samiria Reserve.

Day 9

    • Early morning breakfast will be served followed by a morning departure on our boat, we will start to make our way back in the direction downriver towards Iquitos city.

 

    • Watch birds as they leave their nests to find their food on the river, among them cotingas, macaws, parrots and Harpy (Harpia harpyja).

 

    • Excursion to Yanaquillo Creek to spot squirrel monkeys (Saimiri boliviensis), saddle back tamarins (Saguinus fuscicollis) and sloths (Bradypus variegatus).

 

    • We will stop and see the giant Lupuna (Ceiba pentandra), Capirona, and Capinurí (Heliocóstilis scabra) trees and also eye-catching birds as the Toucan (Pteroglossus), the Red Macaw (Ara macao), the Blue-and-Yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna), the Great Egret (Egreta alba) and the Amazon Kingfisher (Chloroceryle amazona).

 

    • Midday we will stop to have our lunch.

 

    • At night time after dinner, we will make a night excursion by boat to search for the various species of nocturnal animals; this also gives us the enjoyable opportunity to hear the symphony of sounds that comes from the forest at night.
    • Overnight in tents at Pacaya Samiria Reserve.

Day 10

    • Early morning breakfast will be served followed by a morning departure on our boat to visit Laguna Guaya where we will be able to see to spot graceful pink dolphins (Inia geoffrenssis), “taricayas”, local name given to the yellow-spotted river turtles (Podocnemis unifilis) and usually giant river otters (Ptenerura brasiliensis).

 

    • Canoe cxcursion at Yanayacu Pucate to spot squirrel monkeys (Saimiri boliviensis), saddle back tamarins (Saguinus fuscicollis), sloths (Bradypus variegatus) & other types of monkeys.

    • We will have an early morning breakfast and prepare for our last excursion into the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. After our morning excursion we will return back to camp to have lunch and pack our belonging and make our way back to the city of Iquitos. During the riverboat trip back to Iquitos you will have a great possibility of seeing caimans, turtles, herons, pink river dolphins, snakes, and many other species of flora/fauna along the riverbank.
